A Bethesda, Maryland teen has been accused of stockpiling various weapons and materials used for making bombs. Collin Matthew McKenzie-Gude, 18, also had in his possession a map of the President’s motorcade route to Camp David. Presidential motorcade routes to and from the White House to Camp David in western Maryland are supposed to be secure and not available to outside sources.
During Tuesday’s hearing in a Rockville, MD court, Assistant State’s Attorney Peter Feeney revealed the discovery of the motorcade route and map of Camp David at McKenzie-Gude’s home. The map was clearly marked with the president’s route from Washington to the secluded Maryland retreat.
A Montgomery County police news release stated that police officials found one handgun, two shotguns, four assault rifles and assorted ammunition, along with “chemicals and components commonly used to manufacture homemade explosives” at McKenzie-Gude’s home. In addition to the map and weapons, police also reported other incriminating items at the Gude residence, including range-finding binoculars, a Geneva Convention ID, and CIA ID.
While all the details of the case have not been revealed, officials have charged an unidentified 17 year old male in the case. According to sources, the juvenile worked as a police intern and allegedly stole official stationery to assist McKenzie-Gude in obtaining various chemicals and police gear, including bullet-resistant vests.
Also uncovered in the search was a list of home addresses of faculty members at St. John’s College High School, McKenzie-Gude’s alma mater. There has been no connection between the weapons and the faculty list.
“We have found no further evidence regarding St. John’s high school, so this is a very critical factor in this investigation to try to determine what the purpose was by these two young men by acquiring very dangerous weapons and chemicals,” Montgomery County police spokeswoman Lucille Bauer said.
In addition to the investigations already under way, the CIA and DOD have launched their own investigations of McKenzie-Gude. The ATF and FBI have not announced if they play to launch separate investigations.
Also charged in the case is the teen’s father, Joseph Lane Gude Jr. According to police, Gude illegally purchased the firearms for his son.
McKenzie-Gude is currently being held on $750,000 bond. In addition to the previous charges, the teen faces additional charges for attempting to steal a car from a 78 year old man and allegedly setting off explosives in a nearby field.
